• The envelope. It is not a lifetime asset: the fabric ages with every heating cycle and the envelope is replaced after a certain number of flying hours. That is a heavy investment, amortised over passengers.
• The ground crew and the vehicle. A flight does not mobilise only the pilot: crew members are needed for the inflation, plus a vehicle that follows the balloon and then drives everyone back. This logistics cost cannot be compressed.
• The pilot. Flying a balloon requires a licence issued by the civil aviation authority, with training, examinations and flying hours to maintain. This is not a leisure instructor, it is a pilot in command.
• The aircraft and its checks. A hot air balloon is a registered aircraft: it is subject to regular maintenance and inspections, exactly like a plane, with the insurance that goes with it.
• The number of flyable days. This is the factor nobody sees. We only fly in light wind, without rain, and only at sunrise: that leaves a handful of slots per week, often fewer. All the equipment and the whole crew are therefore amortised over very few flights a year.
